TEK Faculty Fellows Explore the Future of Human-AI Collaborative Learning

TEK Faculty Fellows Yeonjung Kang and Muzhen Li have co-authored a newly published article, “Human, AI, or Co-Creation? Exploring Conventional, AI-Based, and Human-AI Collaborative Learning,” in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Education. The article examines how different approaches to teaching and learning—including traditional instructor-led learning, AI-based learning, and human-AI collaboration—shape student learning outcomes.

Drawing on experiential learning theory, Kang and Li found that each approach offers distinct benefits. Traditional teacher-directed learning can strengthen critical thinking and real-world application, while AI-based learning can support data literacy and efficiency. Human-AI collaboration, meanwhile, can encourage reflective learning and help students integrate objective and subjective perspectives. The researchers also highlight the value of intentionally sequencing these approaches to balance human creativity with AI-driven analysis.

The research aligns closely with TEK’s focus on preparing students with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing workplace. Both Kang and Li will bring this work into their teaching as they incorporate TEK Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) into their Spring 2027 courses. Kang will teach RTM 425: Human Resource Management, while Li will teach MAT 315: Merchandise Planning and Analysis.

Through these courses, students will have opportunities to develop and apply essential skills while engaging with contemporary approaches to learning, technology, and professional practice. Their work demonstrates how TEK Faculty Fellows are connecting research, teaching, and career preparation to help students thrive in an evolving world.
