Students from the TEK course Math and Music took center stage this spring as they presented their work at a poster session hosted by UK Honors College. Their participation highlighted not only the creativity of interdisciplinary learning but also the power of integrating analytical and artistic approaches in undergraduate education.

For students in the TEK Math and Music course, the poster session served as a culminating experience—one that transformed classroom exploration into public scholarship. The course invited students into a deeply interdisciplinary learning environment, by encouraging students to explore connections between mathematical principles and musical structures—drawing inspiration from contemporary artists like The Weeknd and Post Malone - while also engaging with broader fields such as acoustics, physics, astronomy, and neuroscience.

A defining feature of the course was its emphasis on real-world application and professional engagement. Throughout the semester, students interacted with guest practitioners working at the intersection of music and mathematics, including instrument designers, acoustic engineers, recording professionals, and even medical data analysts. These interactions exposed students to diverse career pathways while reinforcing how transdisciplinary thinking operates beyond the classroom.

At the poster session, students presented projects that reflected this interdisciplinary approach. Each team brought a distinct perspective to the course’s central theme of data sonification, translating complex systems into sound in creative and thought-provoking ways. One group’s project, “The Sound You Can’t Hear: Hidden Dangers of Infrasound and How We Can Silence It,” examined low-frequency vibrations below human hearing, highlighting their potential health and environmental impacts while proposing strategies for mitigation. Another team explored “Sonification and Electroencephalograms,” converting brainwave activity into sound to better understand neurological patterns and cognitive states. Several projects focused on applying sonification to data analysis in innovative contexts, including “The Sonification of Stock Market Trends,” which transformed financial data into auditory patterns to reveal fluctuations and trends, and “Using Data Sonification to Monitor Stress Hormones,” where biological data was rendered into sound as a potential tool for tracking physiological well-being. Environmental and spatial applications were also featured in “Hearing the Habitat: Applying Data Sonification to Voronoi Maps,” which used sound to represent ecological or geographic distributions, offering a new way to interpret spatial data. Finally, “The Sound of Your Heart: Turning Vital Signs into Music” brought a deeply personal dimension to the work, translating heart rate and other biometric signals into musical compositions. Together, these presentations demonstrated not only technical skill and creativity, but also the breadth of possibilities that emerge when students learn to hear data as music.

Beyond the content of their projects, the experience emphasized the development of the ten essential skills—particularly communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to synthesize knowledge across disciplines. Presenting in a professional setting required students to translate complex ideas into accessible language, engage with diverse audiences, and respond thoughtfully to questions about their work.

For TEK students, this moment represents more than a single presentation—it reflects a broader shift in how they approach learning. Courses like Math and Music move beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, preparing students to navigate complex, real-world problems that rarely fit neatly into one field. By combining analytical rigor with creative exploration, students are better equipped to think innovatively and adapt to a wide range of future careers.

As the TEK program continues to expand, student participation in the broader campus community underscores its impact. The success of the Math and Music cohort demonstrates how interdisciplinary education can empower students to connect ideas, communicate effectively, and engage meaningfully with the world beyond the classroom.

In bringing together numbers and notes, equations and expression, these students didn’t just present projects—they demonstrated what it means to learn across boundaries and to turn knowledge into something both rigorous and resonant.
